Someone replacing a bottle that started to smell or stopped holding temperature, who would rather buy the gasket than the bottle in two years. Not for anyone who needs it on the top rack of a dishwasher, which vacuum-walled bottles tolerate poorly whatever the listing says.
What to check before you buy
These are attributes you can verify yourself on the listing or in the product photographs, without taking anyone's word for it.
- 18/8 or 304 stainless named for the inner wall, not just stainless steel
- A replaceable lid gasket, sold separately as a spare
- A mouth wide enough to get a bottle brush down to the base weld
- Stated vacuum insulation, not double wall alone, which can mean an air gap
- A hand-wash instruction, a sign the maker knows what a dishwasher does to the seal
- Replacement lids and parts listed by the maker, not only complete bottles
Where it is likely to fail
Almost never the vacuum. It is the lid: the silicone gasket compresses, hardens and stops sealing within a year or two of daily use, and on most bottles it cannot be bought separately. The second failure is the base weld, where moisture trapped under a chipped coating starts rust that spreads beneath the finish. A wide mouth lets you reach the weld to keep it clean and dry.
The honest caveat
Klean Kanteen sells replacement gaskets, caps and lids for this line, which is the reason it is here; the Amazon listing, though, describes the steel only as stainless steel and carries far fewer reviews than the mass-market brands. The maker states 18/8 elsewhere. Insulation hour figures on any bottle are marketing, since nobody states the fill level or room temperature they were measured at; judge the construction and the parts catalogue instead.
