What to check before you buy
These are attributes you can verify yourself on the listing or in the product photographs, without taking anyone's word for it.
- A spout or channel that directs water into the sink, ideally repositionable
- A tray with a visible slope in profile, not a flat pan that holds a film
- A utensil holder that lifts out and has an open or slotted base
- Feet or ribs that stand the rack off its own tray
- The fewest possible capped tubes, hollow feet and sealed frame ends
- Overall dimensions stated, checked against your sink-side run and largest plate
Where it is likely to fail
On a coated or mild-steel rack, rust at the wire welds, spreading under the coating from the point where two wires cross. On any rack, a sour smell from an enclosed volume that fills with water and never dries: hollow feet, capped frame tubes, a utensil cup with a solid bottom. The rack that lasts has the fewest parts you cannot separate and dry.
The honest caveat
The listing says stainless steel without naming a grade. 430 stainless resists a dry environment but pits beside a sink where chlorides are constant; 304 or 18/8 holds up far better, and the difference matters most at the tray and feet, which sellers often make from something cheaper than the wires. Check the current listing and photos for a stated grade, and treat its absence as a reason to expect pitting over years.
