How to tell durable from durable-looking

Weight, gloss and tight seams are cosmetic. The joints, fasteners and coatings tell you how long a product will actually last.

A thing that feels solid in the hand and a thing that survives ten years are two different products, and a store is arranged so you can only check the first one. Most of what reads as quality is surface: heft, gloss, tight seams in the places a photograph shows. The parts that decide the lifespan are usually the parts nobody photographs.

Weight is a proxy, and often a broken one

Density is not strength. Zinc die-cast alloy runs around 6.6 g/cm3 against steel at about 7.8, so a zinc handle feels convincingly metallic. Zinc casting alloys are chosen because they flow into fine detail at low temperature, cast cheaply and take plating well. They are brittle in thin sections, creep under sustained load, and crack at stress risers rather than bending.

Plastics do the same trick from the other direction. Glass-filled nylon is genuinely stiffer than unfilled nylon, and it feels heavier and colder, which is a fair signal. Mineral-filled polypropylene, where chalk displaces resin to cut cost, also feels heavier, and it is usually less impact-resistant than the plain material. Weight alone cannot separate the two.

Weight is also sometimes just added: a steel slug in the base of a plastic housing costs pennies and moves a product up a perceived tier.

Finish and structure are made in different departments

Polishing, plating and powder coating happen at the end of the line, are cheap to do well, and are exactly what the hero image captures. Alloy choice, wall thickness, heat treatment and joint method are decided early, cost real money, and are invisible in the photographs.

A mirror-bright finish tells you the substrate accepted plating prep. It tells you nothing about how thick that substrate is. A brushed or textured finish is often more honest, because it is used where scratches are expected rather than hidden.

The joints are the product

Things rarely fail in the middle of a part. They fail where two parts meet.

On steel, a continuous seam or TIG weld carries load along its whole length. Spot welds carry it at discrete points, concentrate stress at each one, and on a pan handle or a rack they create a crevice that traps moisture and food. Rivets are a mechanical joint you can see and assess. A crimp or a folded tab is the cheapest option and the one most likely to loosen with heat cycling.

On plastic, the hierarchy runs roughly: screws into brass heat-set inserts, then screws into molded plastic bosses, then snap-fit clips, then ultrasonic welding, then adhesive. Screws into raw plastic strip after a few cycles. Snap hooks fatigue and fracture at the root, faster in filled or aged material. Ultrasonic welding is fast, cheap and permanent, and a housing joined that way cannot be opened without breaking it.

Adhesive is not automatically weak. A properly specified structural bond can outperform fasteners. But adhesive on a consumer product is usually there because it is faster than screwing, and it is the joint most sensitive to heat, humidity and creep.

Why a visible screw is often a good sign

Hiding fasteners costs design effort. When a manufacturer leaves screws visible, they have accepted a cosmetic penalty, and the usual reason is that they expect the product to be opened: for service, cleaning, or replacing the part that wears. A standard drive, Phillips or Torx, points the same way. A security drive or a one-way screw points the other.

This is evidence rather than proof: screws also survive because they are the cheapest option for a low-volume run. But between two similar products, the one with accessible fasteners is the one someone can fix.

Coatings that hide the substrate

Bright chrome over zinc die casting is the classic disguise, and it fails in a recognizable way: the plating lifts in flakes at edges and the exposed alloy corrodes to a white powder rather than to red rust.

Powder coat is only as good as the pretreatment under it. Without a phosphate stage or a primer, adhesion fails first at edges, weld seams and fasteners, and rust creeps under an otherwise intact film. Powder also pulls thin over sharp edges and struggles to reach inside corners, so those are the places to zoom in on.

For steel, a magnet separates ferritic grades such as 18/0 from austenitic 18/10 and 304, which are weakly magnetic at most. That says nothing about wall thickness, but it tells you which family you are holding.

What to look for

The photographs a seller chooses not to take are a form of specification. When a listing shows every angle except the underside, the joint or the cord entry, assume the omission is deliberate. Judge on the parts that carry load, and treat finish as what it is: the last operation performed and the cheapest to get right.
